Here is a rationale of the idea behind the device...

Checking authenticity of any object is a challenge. As far as coins are concerned, there are several most popular methods: determining material's density, size, conductivity, and other physical characteristics. Getting exact values for any of the identifying properties is difficult and leads to bulky expensive devices. To tell materials apart is far easier and therefore cheaper. Argaurum is such a device - it can compare two coins and tell if they are made from the same alloy or, more precisely, from two alloys with the same conductivity. Usually it means alloys are the same - in most cases, for most practical purposes, and under normal conditions.
